Race Description
The Abingdon Marathon offers a scenic, predominantly flat course suited for runners of all levels. The marathon is run on a mixture of tarmac, gravel paths, and small sections of grass, providing a varied terrain while maintaining a manageable elevation profile. The total elevation gain is relatively minimal, making it an ideal race for those looking to achieve personal bests.
The route begins at the historic Abingdon Town Centre and leads through picturesque countryside, offering glimpses of the River Thames and rural charm. Key landmarks include the Abingdon Abbey and the stunning Reach Fair, with numerous turn points located at strategic intervals such as the 5-mile and 10-mile markers. Runners will encounter well-marked routes that guide them through the course seamlessly.
Water Stations and Aid Locations
Aid stations are conveniently placed along the course at miles 4, 8, 11, and every 2 to 3 miles thereafter. Each station is stocked with water, electrolyte drinks, and energy gels, ensuring that participants stay hydrated and energized throughout the race.
The race will commence at 9:00 AM from the Market Place in Abingdon (OX14 3HG) and will conclude at the same location, providing easy access for both participants and spectators.
Runners must complete the marathon within a 6-hour timeframe, requiring a pace of approximately 13 minutes and 44 seconds per mile. There is a strict cut-off time to ensure the safety and organization of the event.
The entry fee for the Abingdon Marathon is £40 for unaffiliated runners and £38 for UK Athletics affiliated runners. Early bird registration discounts may be available prior to the official deadline, ensuring that interested participants sign up in a timely manner to secure their spots.
Parking is available at various locations around the town, including the Abbey Gardens and nearby car parks. Public transport options include local bus services, and the Abingdon train station is a short distance away for those traveling by rail.
All participants will receive a bespoke medal and a t-shirt upon completion of the marathon. Refreshments will be available post-race, including fruit, snacks, and drinks, allowing runners to refuel and relax after their race experience.
