Race Description
The Crete Marathon takes place in Chania, a city known for its rich history and picturesque landscapes. The race is scheduled to start at 07:00 from the National Sports Center of Chania, specifically at Elev. Venizelou, located outside the main entrance of the Chania stadium. The finish line is also at the same venue, ensuring easy access for participants and spectators alike.
This marathon features a scenic route that covers approximately 42.195 kilometers. The course predominantly consists of paved roads and provides a combination of urban and coastal views, passing through various landmarks such as Hatzimichalis Giannari, Halidon, and Kountourioti, leading participants to the old port of Chania and further towards the Talos Square.
The elevation profile includes gentle hills, with an overall elevation gain approximating 100 meters. Runners can expect a few gradual inclines as they navigate through the course, making it relatively manageable for those with moderate marathon experience. The surface is primarily asphalt, providing a solid footing throughout.
Participants will find several aid stations along the route, positioned strategically at approximately every 4 kilometers, with water stations located at miles 4, 8, 11, and additional refreshment points later in the race. Medical support will be available at key locations to ensure runner safety.
The marathon has a cut-off time of 6 hours, requiring participants to maintain an average pace of approximately 8:30 per kilometer. Runners who do not meet this pace may be asked to withdraw from the race to ensure safety and progression for all participants.
For registration, the entry fee is set at €50. Interested runners must complete their registration by the deadline, which is four weeks prior to the event. This includes a comprehensive package that features race amenities such as an official t-shirt, a finisher's medal, and post-race refreshments to help with recovery.
Parking will be available at the National Sports Center, and participants are encouraged to arrive early to secure a space. Public transport options are also accessible, with local buses servicing the area and connections to major parts of Chania.
