Race Description
A few years ago there was an event called the Gran Canaria – Maspalomas Marathon, which was a traditional road marathon (42.195 km on asphalt) held in the Maspalomas area of Gran Canaria, with its most recent edition taking place in November 2023. That race attracted competitive runners and was part of the local running calendar, but it appears that after 2023 the event was discontinued amid organisational issues and lack of ongoing local support, effectively ending the Maspalomas Marathon as a regular annual road marathon.
Separately, the Transgrancanaria festival of races has been growing in prominence on the island. This is primarily a trail running event with multiple distances over rugged terrain across Gran Canaria’s mountains and landscapes. One of those distances is currently the Transgrancanaria “Marathon”, which is around 47 km of mountain course (with significant climbing and descending) from Tejeda to Maspalomas. Unlike the old Maspalomas road marathon, this Transgrancanaria Marathon is a trail race rather than a flat road event and remains active as part of the Transgrancanaria series
The Gran Canaria Marathon was run on 100% asphalt and 195 metres of walkway on the beach. The finishing line on the beach and there is 179 metres of positive difference in altitude. It is a 2 lap race.
Refreshment points with liquids and solids every 2.5 km which includes Isotonic drinks: Powerade, Water: Aquabona, Bananas from the Canary Islands, Nuts and dried fruit mix.
From the Climatological data of the last 5 years the weather conditions indicate this for runners of the marathon:
- Temperatures at the time of starting (8:00) 17º - 18º.
- Maximum temperature: 22º-23º.
- Humidity: ~65-75%.
- Wind: 0-6 km/h
- Chance of clear skies 75%.
