Race Description
The Istanbul Marathon is a unique opportunity to experience a race that spans two continents, commencing on the Asian side of Istanbul and concluding on the European side. The race starts on the Bastion of the Anadoluhisarı, specifically at the intersection of the Küçüksu Road and the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, providing a stunning backdrop of historical landmarks and the Bosphorus Strait.
The marathon course is predominantly flat, allowing participants to experience the diverse terrains of Istanbul. However, runners should be prepared for gentle elevations, especially as they cross the iconic bridge. The surface is primarily asphalt, ensuring suitable footing for marathon conditions. The route winds through various districts, showcasing the architectural beauty and cultural richness of the city.
Course Map and Elevation Profile
The race passes through notable landmarks such as the Dolmabahçe Palace, Taksim Square, and the historic Sultanahmet District, where participants can enjoy views of the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. The route consists of wide thoroughfares and is designed to accommodate a large number of runners, while areas of the course may require navigational awareness due to turns and intersections.
Water and aid stations will be conveniently located at approximately every 2-3 kilometers along the route, with specific stations positioned at miles 4, 8, and 11. These aid stations provide water, energy drinks, and snacks, ensuring that runners are well-supported throughout the race.
The race will officially start at 9:00 AM and participants must complete the marathon within a strict time limit of 6 hours, which requires maintaining a minimum pace of approximately 13:45 minutes per mile or 8:30 minutes per kilometer.
For those interested in participating, the entry fee is set at 80 USD, and registration will close one month prior to the event date. Participants should note that online registration is the only accepted method.
Parking options are limited in the vicinity of the start and finish areas. Runners are encouraged to use public transport, such as the metro or buses, which will offer special services on race day to accommodate participants and spectators.
All finishers of the marathon will receive a commemorative medal and a finisher’s T-shirt, along with refreshments available at the finish area. Participants can expect a range of local and international food options to help replenish energy post-race.
