Race Description
The Glendalough Lap of the Gap Marathon is set in the scenic Wicklow Mountains of Ireland. The route comprises a mix of tarmac and trail surfaces, providing a varied experience throughout the race. The course is primarily characterized by its undulating terrain, with an elevation gain of approximately 500 meters, making it a moderately challenging marathon for participants.
The race begins at 9:00 AM, with the starting line located at the Glendalough Visitor Centre, at the following address: Glendalough, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Runners will make their way through well-marked trails, passing notable landmarks such as the ancient monastic site of Glendalough and the picturesque Upper Lake. Key turn points include the first turn at the O’Tools pub, approximately 5 kilometers into the race, and a second notable turn at the bridge near Powerscourt Waterfall, around the 12-kilometer mark. The course continues to loop back to the finish line at the Visitor Centre, ensuring a familiar route for the runners.
Participants can view the detailed course map on the official race website. It provides insight into the elevation changes and the layout of the course, helping runners to prepare adequately for the varied terrain.
Hydration is crucial during the marathon, and aid stations are strategically placed at every 4 kilometers. Water stations can be found at the following markers: 4 km, 8 km, 12 km, and 16 km. Each station will offer water and energy drinks, with some providing snacks for endurance support.
To ensure safety, there is a cut-off time of 6 hours to complete the marathon, which requires participants to maintain a minimum pace of 8:30 per kilometer. This time limit allows for adequate on-course support and safety checks.
The entry fee for the Glendalough Lap of the Gap Marathon is €80, with a registration deadline set for one month prior to the race date. All participants must complete the registration process to secure their spot in the event.
Parking is available at the Glendalough Visitor Centre, but it can fill up quickly on race day. Public transportation options include local bus services that operate from Dublin to Glendalough, making it convenient for out-of-town participants.
Race amenities include a finisher’s medal and a technical T-shirt for all participants. Refreshments will be provided at the finish line, including healthy snacks and beverages to help with post-race recovery.
