Race Description
The Worthing Half Marathon is a 13.1-mile race held in West Sussex, featuring a predominantly flat, fast course that is fully road-closed to ensure a safe running environment. The surface is primarily smooth asphalt roads, suitable for road running shoes. The course includes minimal elevation changes, with gentle undulations rather than steep climbs, making it accessible for a wide range of runners. The total elevation gain and loss are modest, supporting steady pacing throughout the race.
The route begins at the Worthing Leisure Centre, located on the corner of Burlington Avenue and Brighton Road (BN11 2LN). From the start, runners head east along the seafront before turning inland through residential and park areas including Goring-by-Sea and the Ferring area. Key landmarks on the course include the Worthing Pier, Ferring Rife, and the South Downs National Park views at certain points. The turnaround occurs near Ferring village, allowing runners to retrace part of their route back towards Worthing seafront for the finish.
Water and aid stations are positioned at strategic points to support hydration and runner welfare during the event. These stations are located approximately at miles 4, 8, and 11. Each station provides water, and some also offer sports drinks and energy gels. Medical assistance is available along the course, with fully trained marshals and first aid teams stationed at intervals.
The finish line is situated on the seafront at Worthing Pier, providing a scenic and well-supported end to the race. Timing mats record finish times electronically, and amenities near the finish area include refreshment stands and seating. The event enforces a time limit of 3 hours, requiring an average pace of about 13:45 minutes per mile or faster to complete the course within the allotted time.
Entry fees for the Worthing Half Marathon vary depending on the registration date: early bird rates are set at £40, with the standard entry fee of £45 applying after the early deadline. Registration closes two weeks before race day or earlier if the race reaches capacity. Payment is made online during the registration process.
Parking is available in nearby public car parks including the Burlington Car Park and Steyne Gardens Car Park, both within walking distance of the start/finish area. Additionally, Worthing is accessible by train via Worthing Railway Station, which is approximately a 15-minute walk from the Leisure Centre. Local bus routes also service the area, with regular connections on race day.
Race amenities for participants include a commemorative medal awarded upon finishing, a technical race t-shirt available to early registrants, and refreshments at the finish line. Post-race facilities include changing rooms and bag drop at the Leisure Centre. An after-party with music takes place near the finish area on race day to provide a social atmosphere for runners and supporters.
